Grappers snatch victory in the rain

RAIN played a major role in the weekend’s cricket programme in the Warrington area, with matches cancelled, abandoned and shortened – but Grappenhall manage to snatch a victory in their Vivio Cheshire County League game against Tattenhall at Broad Lane.
Winning the toss, they asked the visitors to bat first and restricted them to 149-7 in 38 overs. Alex Matthews took 3-31 and Gaz Burns 2-18.
Grappers set off at a blistering pace, determined to win before rain could end proceedings. Skipper Adam Roylance hammered 21 and fellow opener James McCoy 70 as they reached their target with an over to spare.
Grappenhall 2nd were defeated by the weather, batting first at Bramhall and hitting 185-3, Iain Wright 100 not out, but then failing to dismiss the opposition before the weather closed in. Bramhall were 92-8 at the end, giving Grappers the lion’s share of a drawn game.
In the Cheshire Cup, Grappenhall progressed to the second round by defeating Cheadle buy three runs in a game reduced to 25 overs.
Warrington’s game at Marple was abandoned without a ball being bowled and Warrington 2nd were frustrated by the weather when they played Nantwich at Walton Lea.
Alistair Begg hit 44 and Isaac Webstaer 42 as Warrington hit 185-9 in 45 overs. Nantwich were 40-2 when the game was abandoned to the weather.
In the Cheshire League, Appleton’s game at Stretton was abandoned.
Lymm Oughtrington Park suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Barnton at Oughtrington Lane, the visitors batting first and reaching 137-7. Matthew Bradshaw took 3-55, Jack Hughes 2-16 and Travis Scholes 2-31. Lymm were bowled out for 66 with Scholes, 27, the only batsman to offer much resistance.
In the 2nd XI fixture at Barnton, the home side were dismissed for 51, Tony Spaven taking 6-17 and Shovan Chattergee 4-29  and Lymm claimed victory for the loss of one wicket, Asim Shah hitting 48.
In the Cheshire Alliance, Glazebury suffered another batting collapse as they subsided to 58 all out. Whistaton Village hit off the runs without loss.
Rylands struggled to reach 101-9, Eddie Platt 33 and Alan Brady 27. But they then dismissed Frodsham for 69, Nathan Lowe taking 4-14 and AlanThomas 4-24.
Appleton 3rd held on for a draw after Mellor had hit 202-8. Appleton were 122-6 at the close.
Appleton 4th were restricted to 101-9 at Styal, where the home side replied with 102-7, despite Paul Hesford’s 3-28.
