Wolves players help youngsters celebrate World Book Night

PUPILS from Penketh High School met their favourite Warrington Wolves players during a visit to the Halliwell Jones Stadium as part of celebrations for World Book Night.

Players from the team have signed up to be Rugby Reading Champions to help encourage and inspire local children to achieve through reading.

The project, which is run by LiveWire, aims to increase confidence and help young people develop their reading skills in order to increase engagement at the town’s libraries.

Each pupil was given the chance to chat to the players about their favourite book and every player was given a book to gift to community groups.

The visit was part of World Book Night which saw LiveWire libraries gift 540 books to residents across the town last weekend as part of the annual event.

More than 15 different titles are were given away this year, including Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose, Am I Normal Yet by Holly Bourne, Too Good To Be True by Ann Cleeves, and Reasons To Stay Alive by Matt Haig.

Chris Everett, senior LiveWire advisor for reading, said: “It’s fantastic that players from Warrington Wolves got involved with the celebrations for World Book Night as part of their role as Rugby Reading Champions. The pupils really enjoyed chatting to the players about how much they love to read and finding out what it’s like to play for a rugby league side”.
