Residents back plans for new supermarket

RESIDENTS are backing plans for a new supermarket on the site of a famous Warrington pub which is due to close.

Danish store chain Netto plans to build a new store on the site of the Sportman’s Arms at Penketh, creating up to 20 jobs.
Residents were invited to a drop-in session to learn about the proposals.
Feedback on the day showed that more than half those attending would like to see a Netto replace the pub when it closes.
Eighteen per cent were unsure, three per cent would prefer a fastfood drive-through and proposals for a restaurant or social housing also received low support.
The pub is due to close next year.
Current landlord Joe Dodd said: “We have lived in Penketh all of our lives and have been the tenant landlord for the last eight years, which we are proud of given the current economic climate.
“Last year 29 pubs a week closed in the UK due to changes in consumer spending and lifestyle choice. Penketh is no different as all outlets in the community are struggling. Having so many pubs in such a small area isn’t sustainable.
“The reality is The Sportsmans Arms will close and we need to replace one asset with another – one that will benefit the whole community.”
The new store would provide around 8,500 sq ft of retail space and also include 73 car parking spaces.

Lynn Perry, who lives behind the site and been a Penketh resident for 48 years, said: “It is a shame that The Sportsmans Arms will have to close, but I’d rather have a Netto than a fast food chain or an empty building, which could attract anti social behaviour.”
Jo Hawley, Netto development surveyor, said: “The opportunity to create a new store is an exciting one.
“The store will bring more shopping choice to the area as well as create up to 20 jobs for local people.”
The company is also planning to include road improvements in Warrington Road when their planning application is submitted to Warrington Borough Council.
