Triumphant Town end season with another win

VIDEO: WARRINGTON Town finished a triumphant season with a 3-2 victory over closest challengers Spennymoor Town.

The league champions completed the double over their closest challengers, who will attempt to join Warrington in the Evo-Stik Premier League next season through the end of season play-offs in midweek.

Three goals in the first 19 minutes ensured the travelling fans were going to enjoy their final game at this level in carnival style, as Town emphasised their quality as the best team in the division, despite a fight back from the home side.

Prior to the game, Spennymoor greeted the champions with a guard of honour before a minute’s applause was held in memory of late Town director Peter Turner.

It took seven minutes for the first goal to come, Warrington breaking upfield with Phil Dean, who found Steven Gillespie in the middle.

A second goal came barely a minute later, this time Scott Metcalfe slotting the ball past the ‘keeper.

That double-salvo was almost followed by a third in three minutes when James McCarten hit a free-kick just wide.

The third goal did come before the 20 minute mark, Ben Deegan finishing with ease from a Danny Ventre free-kick.

Spennymoor got a goal back shortly after through Gavin Cogdon, but Town had a golden opportunity to restore their three goal advantage on the half hour mark.

Goalkeeper Mark Bell brought down Metcalfe, giving Gillespie the chance to step up to take a spot kick, only for Bell to redeem himself with a save.

Spennymoor gradually got themselves back in to the game before the break, though the best chance fell to Town on the stroke of half time, Daniel O’Donnell heading wide from Metcalfe’s free-kick.

Warrington aimed to close the game out in the second half, and introduced anchor man Warren Beattie in place of Dean.

Spennymoor got a second goal back shortly before the hour mark, again through Cogdon.

But they struggled to carve out any clear cut opportunities in the final quarter, with Wills only really troubled by a long range free-kick.

Town held on for their 34th win of the season, taking their total points tally to 106 – a league record -, while their total goals of 121 is also a record.

They finish 15 points clear of second place Spennymoor, who will take on Burscough at home in the play-offs on Tuesday night.
