THE world’s oldest and longest running photographic exhibition involving striking and evocative images by international photographers are on show in Warrington and giving visitors an insight to life in the far-flung corners of the world.

The collection, on display at Warrington Museum & Art Gallery now until April 30, depicts all walks of life: from intimate portraits of skin-heads to beauty queens via an Inuit and members of an Indonesian tribe, as well as stunning shots of the natural and manmade worlds in China, Slovenia and New York to name a few.

This touring exhibition, which has already called at the Royal Albert Hall in London, is The Royal Photographic Society’s 158th International Print Exhibition: it is the world’s oldest and longest-running exhibition of its kind, having been held almost every year since the society was founded in 1853.

The competition this year received nearly 5,000 entries from students, amateurs and professionals in 56 countries worldwide and the winning images reflect the diversity of those submitted.

Gold was given to Jan Klos from Poland who entered a bold image from his Photographic Guide to the Pubs of East London collection which captures a ‘family portrait’ of staff at the gay-friendly Nelson’s Head in Shoreditch.

The under 30s gold prize went to the UK’s David Severn for his portrait of Miss Mansfield 2013-2014 which he captured as part of his exploration of former coalfield areas.

Silver was awarded to Frank Machalowski from Germany for his striking black and white photograph of a rhino in German woodland which challenges the viewer to question what they see.

Lithuanian photographer Tadao Cern’s image of two elderly ladies sunbathing on a beach, entitled Comfort Zone 1, was awarded bronze. It formed part of his exploration of how people’s surroundings affect their behaviour.

Derek Dick, outreach and engagement manager at Culture Warrington, said: “It is great to be included in The Royal Photographic Society’s tour and the exhibition really adds to the displays we are already showcasing here; some amazing photography.

“The striking and evocative images give an insight into the issues which are inspiring photographers around the world today.”
