THE Institute of British Sign Language has received a £5,000 donation at their Warrington branch towards helping learners qualify in British Sign Language (BSL).

The donation was provided by The Discovery Foundation, supported by Santander UK, which offers grants to UK registered charities for projects that help disadvantaged people in local communities.

The grant will be used to purchase video recording and storage equipment to further the organisation’s goal of helping learners qualify in British Sign Language.

IBSL is a UK charity, accredited by Ofqual, providing a range of qualifications in British Sign Language and Deaf Studies that meet the needs of learners of all ages and abilities. The grant will enable the charity to purchase video recording and storage equipment which will help to provide information to students in an accessible format.

Michelle Jones, (pictured) Service Manager at the Institute of British Sign Language said: “Traditionally, people have had to rely on information presented in written English which is not always accessible to deaf people. The generous grant from The Discovery Foundation will ensure deaf people are able to access information in their first language which in turn will assist in deaf tutors’ personal development.”

Dave Murphy, Branch Director at Santander’s Warrington branch said: “The Discovery Foundation makes hundreds of donations every year to good causes throughout the UK. Our branch is committed to playing a key part in the community and we are delighted to be supporting Institute of British Sign Language and hope the donation makes a real difference to local deaf people.”
