Grants made available for community groups

THE Council is offering community groups the opportunity to apply for grants of up to £2000.

Warrington Borough Council’s south area neighbourhood team is eager to know if the Local Area Fund can support groups and have a real impact on their local community.

The team has recently supported a variety of projects:

AppleTots – a network for parents and carers of small children in the south Warrington Area who applied for support for books and craft materials

Warrington Disability Partnership needed facilities for wheelchair basketball, a dementia café in Penketh and more recently Hook and Jab, a sports group based in Latchford which provides amateur boxing training and competitions.

They also work with dis-advantaged groups such as young offenders, children excluded from school and children with SEND. The group uses boxing to promote discipline, respect, and self-reliance, whilst encouraging a healthy lifestyle among its members.

Cllr Kate Hannon, executive board member for leisure, culture and heritage, said: “In the South, as in all our Neighbourhood areas, we have a great track record of using the local fund to help community groups deliver fantastic projects.

“If you are involved in a community project aimed at helping local residents, please don’t hesitate to contact us.”

Amanda Groarke from Hook and Jab said: “Hook and Jab is delighted to have received funding from the council – sparring gloves and head guards mean that more of our kids are now able to take part in full technical sessions, sparring and conditioning work – having this money to spend on kit has also meant that we are able to fund more coaches, which in turn means we will be able to give more time to more individuals.”

To apply, call the South Area Manager on 01925443187. Alternatively, email [email protected].
