THE 23rd anniversary of the Warrington IRA bombing is to be commemorated by a Peace Lecture in the town delivered by BBC Middle East Editor and presenter, Jeremy Bowen.
Jeremy will visit Warrington to speak at the Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Peace Centre on Thursday 24th March 2016. Jeremy is a BBC journalist and war correspondent. He started his career in El Salvador and has reported from more than 70 different countries, mostly in the Middle East.
He was part of a BAFTA winning team that was in Bosnia Herzegovina during the Bosnian War and then from Kosovo, during which he was robbed at gunpoint by bandits. He has been under fire on assignment a number of times. In what he was later to describe as the pivotal moment of his life, a colleague and friend was killed in May 2000 in Lebanon. Suffering from the trauma he moved to a studio job hosting BBC Breakfast.
He returned to the field in March 2003, as special correspondent and became the BBC’s first Middle East Editor. He came under fire again in Lebanon and in 2013 was shot in the head with pellets whilst reporting in Egypt. Bowen became the first British journalist to interview Muammar and was one of the few journalists inside Syria reporting in 2015 and spoke with President Bashar al-Assad.
The peace lecture will be held to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the Warrington bombing and is a unique opportunity to hear form somebody who has been at the frontline of reporting from zones of violent conflict and to hear Jeremy’s opinion of how we build peace and resolve conflict.
Nick Taylor, Chief Executive of the Foundation said: “The contemporary news is dominated by the acts and consequences of violence. There isn’t a day goes by that we are not shown the futility of violent conflict. Our knowledge of such violence is often down to journalists like Jeremy, who, sometimes at great risk to themselves, bring the pictures and words to inform and further our knowledge about such events.
“His talk is going to bring a unique insight into war, violent conflict and also what we al need to do to further the cause of peace. We are very grateful to Jeremy for agreeing to come to Warrington to deliver the peace lecture.”
