Northwich slapped with points deduction

WARRINGTON Town could be a step closer to winning the title and playing at the highest level in the club’s history with rivals Northwich set to be handed a nine-point deduction by the FA.

The sensational news broke merely hours after Northwich had claimed what had seemed to be a crucial 3-2 win in Saturday’s top of the table clash at Wincham Park.

But instead of being 10 points behind Warrington with three games in hand, and the title race very much on, they have now been dealt what could be a killer blow.

The nine point deduction relates to a registration issue surrounding goalkeeper Mason Springthorpe, who has played in both games against Warrington this season, and was the front page news in today’s Non-League Paper.

The severity of the deduction equates to the number of points earned when international clearance hadn’t been given for the goalkeeper back in September and October.

Northwich are believed to be appealing the decision through the Court of Arbitration for Sport, having already lost an appeal to the FA.

Such has been the dominance of the top two this season, Northwich will remain second even with a nine point deduction, albeit by the virtue of having a better goal difference than Spennymoor.

Northwich still have three games in hand on Warrington, but with only 13 games to play for them in total, overturning a 19 point deficit is highly unlikely, especially given Town’s form to date.

Warrington’s highest ever league position came two seasons ago, when they finished third in the same division behind Curzon Ashton and Darlington.

Curzon, who were champions that year, went on to bag successive promotions and currently ply their trade in National League North, just two divisions below the Football League.

Town have 10 games left of this season, starting with the trip to Droylsden on Tuesday night (7.45pm kick-off).
