New high visibility lights for zebra crossings

NEW, higher visibility lights are to be installed on all Warrington’s zebra crossings – making them safer to use.
The new DayBright design uses flashing LED lights in both the globe and the post of zebra crossings to give drivers enhanced daylight visibility of the crossings.
All 36 of the borough’s zebra crossings are being fitted with new lights which will increase the visibility of those crossing. The new lights will be retro-fitted to the current zebra crossing heads and posts without the need for any civil engineering work.
The new system gives higher daylight visibility especially in bright sunlight conditions, enhancing the complete post rather than just the globe. It also has an automatic light dimming feature that controls its light intensity, so the brightness needed in sunlight will be reduced at night or in cloudy conditions.
It is being funded by the council’s annual Local Transport Plan capital programme.
Cllr Hans Mundry, the council’s lead member for highways, transport and the public realm, said: “We are committed to improving road safety for pedestrians and drivers, and the new light design will make zebra crossings more visible, even on the brightest of days. We’ll be retrofitting them to all our zebra crossings over the coming weeks.”
