STUDENTS across Warrington were celebrating today as the town’s schools and colleges reported another successful haul of A Level results.

There were scenes of jubilation at all schools as students learned their results.

A record number of Warrington students are understood to be heading for university – with most of them going to their university of first choice.

Lymm High School reported another successful set of A level results.
The school reported a significant improvement in the key measures since last year, with 53 per cent of grades awarded at A*-B and over a quarter at A*-A.

Subjects that have performed especially well include Mathematics, Physics, English Literature and Business Studies.

Large numbers of students have secured places at top universities on highly competitive courses, including two who will be going to Cambridge University.

Of special note were Emma Catlow, Lily Dyble, Matthew Pyman and Joe McManus, all of who secured straight A* grades. Many more achieved A* or A grades in all the subjects they sat.
New head teacher Gwyn Williams, said: “A huge amount of credit must go to the students and staff involved. The improvement in results over the last year is testament to the hard work that has been put in by all concerned.

“I haven’t had the chance to get to know many of the Year 13 students in the short time I’ve been here, but it has been a lovely morning watching the happy faces of so many of them as they realise that all the effort was worth it. I wish every one of them the very best for the future.”
Birchwood College also reported another success year.

There was a 100 per cent pass rate for both A Levels and BTEC Level 3 courses and 96 per cent of students gained their first choice university place.

All students who applied were offered a university place.
At A Level, 100 per cent achieved A*- E grades and 67 per cent of students gained A*-C grades

In History there was a 100 per cent A*-B pass rate and in Biology there was a 100 per cent A*-C pass rate.

Individual successes included Elizabeth Yarwood who gained a double Distinction* for Music and Distinction* for BTEC Level 3 Business Studies.
She is set to continue her music studies at LIPA in September.

Kara Hunte who plays Handball for England is going on to study Sport & Exercise Science at Brunel University in the Autumn, having gained a strong set of grades, including an A grade in A Level PE.
John Burnham, head of Birchwood College said, “We are delighted for all our students this year who have gained the results they deserve to enable them to progress to the next stage in academic life or employment.

“They and the staff who support them have all worked incredibly hard. It is testament to the ethos and environment of our college, where we aim to focus on every individual student, meeting their needs and developing their aspirations to give them the best chance of success.”

More than 600 young people collected A-Level results at Priestley College  and were celebrating after two years of study.

They secured a 99 per cent pass rate – the 11th successive year a cohort has enjoyed this achievement – with 100 per cent passing in 39 subjects.

Among them was Katheryn Thompson, formerly of Penketh High, who achieved As in English Literature, History, Maths and an A* in Law. She is now headed to Oxford to study the Classics and English.

Principal Matthew Grant said the A-Level success followed another set of outstanding BTEC results earlier in the summer when Priestley saw a 100 per cent pass rate in all extended diplomas.
He said: “This year’s results really do mark us out as the area’s leading provider of A-Level and vocational courses.

“Our focus on challenging students to achieve their best whilst providing inspiration and the support they need has paid off again and we are extremely proud of the students’ achievements.”
Students achieved 200 As and A*s and an impressive overall 68 per cent of grades were awarded at A* to C.

Vocational students delivered outstanding results with 68 securing triple distinction stars and 124 with triple distinctions.

As always many vocational students also took A-Levels alongside their main programme and many achieved top marks in both.

Among them was former Bridgewater High School pupil Amy Dewsnip who was delighted with As in A-Level Drama, English Language and Literature and History to go with her double distinction star in Performing Arts.

She will now pursue her dream of becoming a professional actress and the next stage is studying at East 15 Acting School in Essex.
