RESIDENTS of Warrington are being invited out for a free dinner – on local community champion Healthwatch Warrington.
Patients, carers, relatives, members of the public and anyone with an experience to share can attend the “dinner and discuss” session at the Masonic Hall, in Winmarleigh Street on August 26 at 6pm to discuss medicines management.
Among organisations attending will be Warrington CCG Medicines Management Team, Community Pharmacy Cheshire and Wirral Team and a NICE Public Involvement Programme Adviser.
The event will also be a chance to have a say on the CCG’s current consultation, to alter prescriptions of medications or alternatives for minor ailments.
NHS Warrington CCG spends approximately £1 million per year on medicines  available to buy over the counter, which are often only required short term for minor ailments.
This money could be spent on reducing health inequalities across the town for the wider population.
Last year Warrington CCG spent £289,191 on prescribing pain killers that could be bought over the counter.
On average, a standard hip replacement costs £6,300
Only 12 per cent of people pay for prescriptions
On average, including GP time, each prescription costs the NHS £41
A standard cataract operation costs £940
Last year the CCG spent £9,627 on prescribing sunscreen.
The CCG is currently undertaking a formal 90 day consultation on the proposal that, other than in exceptional cases or when not for a minor illness, patients should be expected to buy medicines for minor health problems themselves, rather than being prescribed it by their GP or other clinician.
Booking is required to make sure there will be enough refreshments and food.
