WARRINGTON Wolves finished off the first stage of Super League fixtures with a resounding 6-44 victory at Castleford Tigers, finishing sixth in the table going into the Super 8s, as skipper Joel Monaghan returned from injury to grab two first half tries.
With the Wolves leading 30-0 by the break thanks to Monaghan’s two tries on 7 and 37 minutes, puls other scores from Bennie Westwood (17), Gareth O’Brien (22, Gene Ormsby (33 and Ben Currie (40) with O’Brien landing three conversions, the game was over as a contest.
But to their credit the Tigers never gave up, restricting the Wolves to three second half tries from Stefan Ratchford (53) a first for youngster Sam Wilde (66) and Richie Myler (78), with the home side getting a late consolation from Junior Moors (70).
Full-back Matty Russell suffered an ankle injury which will be a concern ahead of next week’s Challenge Cup Semi-Final against Hull KR.
Head of Coaching Tony Smith was full of praise for Bennie Westwood, who he described as “outstanding, and also half backs O’Brien and Myler.
“I thought our kicking game was outstanding today,” said Smith.
