Saints snatch victory

WARRINGTON lost to St Helens for the third time this season as Jordan Turner’s late try sent the Wolves to a 20-14 defeat.

Having already lost in the reverse fixture at Langtree Park, and in the Magic Weekend clash between the two sides, Tony Smith’s side completed an unwelcome hat-trick.

There could yet be three more meetings between the local rivals this term – in the Challenge Cup final, the Super 8s and the Super League play-offs.

The possibility of that will no doubt be music to Saints fans ears, as they continued their hoodoo at the home of the Wolves, who have only beaten Saints once at the Halliwell Jones Stadium since moving there in 2004.

The reigning champions started brightly, and led 8-0 courtesy of James Roby’s converted try from dummy half and a Luke Walsh penalty.

But Warrington grew in confidence as the half grew to a close, and got on the board when Ben Currie crossed shortly before the break.

Kevin Penny gave the hosts the lead early in the second half until a bulldozing run by Mose Masoe put Saints 14-12 to the good.

Gareth O’Brien’s penalty five minutes from time levelled the scores, but Saints snatched the two points in the last couple of minutes, Turner’s converted try sending his side to the top of the Super League table for 24 hours at least.

Warrington: Russell; Ormsby, Ratchford, Atkins, Penny; O’Brien, Myler; Hill, Clark, Sims, Westwood, Currie, Harrison. Subs: Dwyer, Asotasi, England, Philbin.

St Helens: Quinlan; Dawson, Percival, Turner, Swift; Burns, Walsh; Amor, Roby, Walmsley, Greenwood, Wilkin, Flanagan. SubsMcCarthy-Scarsbrook, Masoe, Savelio, Richards.
