“Commuters let down by government” – MP

WARRINGTON commuters are suffering slow and overcrowded trains – and are going to have to wait for improvements.
They have been badly let down by the government, according to Warrington North MP Helen Jones.
She hit out against the government plan to delay electrification of the Trans-Pennine line.
The MP (pictured) said: “It has been apparent since Christmas that the government’s rail upgrade programme was in serious trouble yet the Tories still fought the election promising this massive investment.
“Electrifying the line from Manchester was meant to be only the beginning of George Osborne’s promised HS3 – an electrified trans-Pennine line. Yet now even this limited project has been put on hold.
“Not only are Warrington commuters suffering slow and overcrowded trains but they are now being told they will wait even longer for improvements.  Yet investment in the south is going ahead.
“A fast trans-Pennine line would do far more for the region’s economy than the proposed HS2 but this government has let down the north yet again. “

  1. Surely Helen Jones should know that when the trans Pennine line is electrified fully those electric trains will bypass Warrington. so eventually even if it does go ahead Warrington commuters will always loose out whatever the solution is to the setback. Be it in the form of electrification or HS3.
