Ben Currie agrees new four year deal at Warrington Wolves

WARRINGTON Wolves’ second rower Ben Currie has agreed a new and improved four-year deal with the club.

Currie, 20, has signed an extended deal to keep him at the Wolves until November 2019.

He made his first-team debut as a 17-year-old back in April 2012 earning heritage number 1101 and has gone on to make 76 appearances crossing for 31 tries to date.

He’s been ever-present this season. He is a versatile player making him able to switch to loose forward and centre where needed.

Currie represented Ireland in Rugby League World Cup 2013 but his recent form this season has seen talks of a potential England cap come to the fore.

On his new contract Currie said: “I’m really happy with the deal. It was good of Warrington to come in early before my contract’s finished. I’m still a young lad and I don’t want to look anywhere else. I’m really happy at Warrington at the moment so I am glad to commit my future here for the next four years.

“I love playing under Tony. He’s been here since I broke through at 17 and it’s my fourth season now and he’s done a lot for me.

“Warrington is one of the top clubs. You know year on year you are going to be challenging for cups and the top four play-offs. We’ve got a good youth team too. There are a lot of young players coming through and being given their chance; the likes of Joe Philbin, George and Toby King, and Dec Patton so it looks good for the future.”

Head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith added: “It’s fantastic news for the club. Ben’s an outstanding young professional and he is really finding his feet in the team. He’s had great consistency this year; he started the season strong and is getting better and better as the season progresses. I am delighted for him and we are ecstatic as a club that he wants to spend his time and his future with us, and sees the good things that we are doing both on and off the field in developing the club. Ben’s going to play a big part in that. I have been quoted in the past talking about his leadership and his potential and I am sure one day he will be leading the team out as a captain of this great club.”

Roger Draper, Warrington Wolves chief executive, said: “As a club we are always looking to the future and are keen to retain our young, British talent. We have been impressed with Ben’s form of late and his attitude both on and off the field. He is a valued asset to the club and we look forward to seeing him develop further both as a person and a player.”
