Warrington Wolves suffer Giant defeat

WARRINGTON Wolves’ top four hopes suffered a Giant set back as they lost 30-19 at Huddersfield – after leading for most of the game.

Winning 18-19 in the closing quarter, the Wolves conceded two tries, one converted and two drop goals as the Giants put themselves in pole position for a top four finish.

Warrington opened the scoring on four minutes when Daryl Clark darted under the sticks from close range with Gareth O’Brien adding the extras to make it 0-6.

But the Giants hit back on 17 minutes when Richie Myler dropped the ball, with Jake Connor first to respond to cross for the try. Brough added the extras to level the scores.

On 27 minutes Warrington regained the lead when O’Brien’s kick bounced back into his hands off Broughton, allowing him to cross for the try which he then converted to make it 6-12.

Two minutes before the break O’Brien then landed a drop goal to make it 6-13.

Four minutes into the half Broughton followed up his own kick to the corner to score with Ellis adding a touchline conversion toi make it 12-13. Tempers get heated in the build up to the try as England and Brough were both shown yellow cards.

Warrington extended the lead on 48 minutes when Ben Harrison won the race to a Myler grubber kick and O’Brien was again on target to make it 12-19 – but that was the last time Warrington were to trouble to scoreboard.

As England and Brough returned to the action Warrington lost momentum when O’Brien took a bad knock and had to leave the field after charging down the ball and making a good break.

As play resumed McGillvary slid over for a try which Boruhg converted to make it 18-19 with 20 minutes to go.

On 64 minutes McGillvary made a good break and as the ball went loose Simpson was able to gather and score with Brough adding the extras to put the Giants 24-19 up.

On 71 minutes Ellis made space for a drop goal and three minutes later added another and then with five minutes left on the clock McGillvary was able to get over in the corner to complete the scoring at 30-19.

Things got heated again the final minute with Connor and Clark both sent to the sin bin.
