PUPILS at Hillside Primary School, Helsby, clocked up more than 5,000 miles within a few weeks of entering a programme to encourage children to get more active.
As a result, the school has received a bursary of £500 – and pupils Mollie Kerr and Jess O’Neill, both aged five, won prizes of new trainers.
The “SparkStart” programme has been introduced by Active Cheshire and New Balance and Hillside Primary were the first school in Cheshire to take part in New Balance’s 100-mile challenge.
Each pupil received a pedometer to record their activity at school and at home – running, walking, jogging, swimming or cycling.
The school recorded the miles completed.
Hillside made a huge effort – and clocked up more than 5,000 in no time.
Head teacher Craig Richardson said: “As a school, we are committed to get our children active. This was a great initiative provided by New Balance and Active Cheshire.
“This formed part of our efforts to encourage all pupils to be physically active and lead a healthy lifestyle. This was a challenge I felt we could achieve.”
To keep things moving during the award, Active Archie from Active Cheshire led a dance off at the school and got everyone to join in.
Anne Boyd, chief executive officer of Active Cheshire, said: “We are delighted that the staff and children at Hillside have embraced this programme.  The challenge embeds ‘active habits’ with children and working with New Balance has meant we could get local children doing this in an accessible and engaging way.  The success of the challenge can be seen by the distance the school have covered. Well done to Mollie and Jess for their hard work!”
