TWO friends are taking to their bikes in support of a national charity dedicated to fight the deadly skin cancer, melanoma.
Jonathan Morton, from Helsby and John Denny, from Appleton, will ride coast to coast – from Whitehaven to Sunderland – over the weekend of May 22-24 in aid of Melanoma Focus.
The route covers more than 130 miles through some of the most exciting cycling country in the UK
Dr Morton is a plastic surgeon, working in the field of melanoma, and knows at first hand how  important it is to raise awareness of the disease.
He works at St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and sees the effects of the condition day to day.
John Denny is chief executive officer of the charity Voluntary Missionary Movement.
Simon Rodwell, chief executive officer of Melanoma Focus, who will be part of the bike ride’s support crew, said: “We are extremely grateful to John and Jonathan and their generous friends and families for supporting Melanoma Focus.
“We urgently need more people to raise funds for our fight against melanoma. There is no better way than to cycle across the country with like-minded people, having fun while raising money for a great cause.”
Although it’s a fairly rare disease, melanoma is the UK’s fastest-growing cancer, with more than 13,000 new cases reported every year.
The charity is dedicated to improving treatment and diagnosis for patients.
