UMBRELLAS, waterproofs and sun glasses were the order of the day as some 3,000 people took to the streets of Warrington as the annual Walking Day procession was blessed with mixed weather.
Although the rain held off for the start of the town’s historic demonstration of Christian Witness, the rain, some times heavy, arrived while it was still winding its way through the town centre.
A heavy downpour lashed the walkers before the procession was over – more or less as the weather forecasters had predicted.
But, as had happened before, the people of Warrington shrugged off the showers and carried on to make sure the Walk – believed to be the 178th – triumphed over the elements.
Road closures began from around 7.30am and from around 9am, no traffic was allowed into the town centre until after 1pm.
The Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr and Mrs Steve Wright took the salute from a raised dais in front of the Golden Gates as the procession left the Town Hall lawn. The Mayor later joined walkers.
But many churches, schools and other organisations were on the move much earlier, walking in procession to the town centre to join the main procession..
Warrington North MP Helen Jones gave the contingent from St Benedict’s RC Church, in Orford Lane, a good send-off.
Several marching bands accompanied the procession, which was headed, as usual, by St Elphin’s Parish Church.
