THE A56 Chester Road at Walton, Warrington has now re-opened to traffic following the four-vehicle pile-up early this morning.
Three people were taken to hospital after being released from their crushed vehicles and the road was closed, in both directions, for almost five hours.
A 28-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man were taken to Warrington Hospital for check-ups and a 25-year-old man was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital with serious leg injuries.
Diversions were put in place – but with much traffic being diverted onto the A49, where there is also a lane closure due to a sewer collapse in London Road, Stockton Heath, there was chaos.
Hundreds of people were made late for work as a result of a huge backlog of traffic.
Three cars and a van were involved in the crash and police, fire and ambulance services were involved in the rescue and clear-up operation.
No details have as yet been released about the condition of the casualties.
Police are appealing for witnesses of the crash. Anyone with any information about the incident is being urged to call Cheshire Police on 101.
