WARRINGTON’S new Mayor Cllr Steve Wright was described as a “true

working class hero” when he was elected at the annual meeting of the

council.
Cllr Wright, who represents the Latchford East Ward, took over from retiring Mayor Cllr Mike Biggin.
A born and bred Warringtonian, Cllr Wright, was nominated by his fellow ward councillor Hans Mundry.
“Steve is a true working class hero who shows that anyone can achieve anything if they work hard enough,” said Cllr Mundry.
Cllr Wright, father of five, who works as a community co-ordinator at St Margaret’s Community Centre, will be supported by his childhood sweet heart Julie, as Mayoress. Former finance chief Peter Carey, was elected deputy mayor.
Commenting on his appointment as Mayor Cllr Wright said: “To be made Mayor of my home town is truly humbling.
“I am extremely proud to be the 129th Mayor of Warrington.
“I will strive to ensure that everything I do is for the benefit of the people of Warrington but I will never forget my duty of service as the elected member for Latchford East.
“I am extremely proud of my Warrington roots and I see my role of Mayor as being an opportunity to put something back into the community and I want this role to be delivered as value for money.”
Cllr Wright was born in Orford and went to English Martyrs school and served an apprenticeship as a plasterer. He later worked at Alcan before his community work.
He has supported many community initiatives and was a volunteer with St John Ambulance for many years.

Congratulations Steve. A great speech yesterday and an inspiration to all Warrington youngsters of this Town. It was really good to see so many of your friends and family celebrating your success with you on your special day. Your whit will certainly make you visits in the community very enjoyable but your down to earth approach will keep your feet on the ground. You follow on from another excellent Mayor in Mike so no presssure. Lol

  2. Cllr Steve Wright was elected in May 2006 so he has been a councillor for the last 6 years and he has been the Deputy Mayor for the last 12 months.

  3. I checked on the council website – Peter Carey has been a councillor for 2 years. But I believe that he also worked for the council for donkeys years before that, so doesn’t that count?

  4. cllr Settle – we are talking about the new dep mayor.

service as a member of staff should not count for anything – or are you saying if he gets a pension from WBC THEN HE SHOULD STAND DOWN as a cllr because its an income from wbc???

Maybe all cllr’s should be looked at and if the council has any dealing with cllr’s employers then they must go/stand down

Did it not previously have to be that Councillors were elected to this position on seniority – years of service – despite their political persuasion. Are we now back to the previous position with Labour that they consider the mayor the Chairman of the Council and therefor only Labour Members will now be elected since they now control the Council? It seems strange that no other long serving Councillors want the job! Hope both Mayor and Deputy have a successsful year.
