Anger over travellers' camp

RESIDENTS in aWarrington village have expressed anger and alarm after a group of travellers set up camp at a popular recreational area.
The group of about 20 vans, which have set up camp at Culcheth, are believed to have moved on from the Birchwood area.
The unauthorised “camp” arrived complete with dogs and kennels on the car park of Shaw Street playing fields.
Angry residents contacted councillors to try to get the travellers evicted.
Local Cllr Keith Bland said: “People are really unhappy about this and are asking how they got there. But the field is well used so the gates to the car park are left open.”
He said people were anxious to get the camp removed, before it became long term. They are concerned about the impact on the neighbourhood and about what state the site may be left in when they move on.
“The main concern is that the site may be left in a mess when they move on.” he said.
Today the travellers moved up the road to Glazebury and occupied the car park at discount store M and S.
Cllr Sue Bland, who represents Glazebury on the parish council, said: “This is private land, so the owner has got a problem.”
It is understood the travellers moved on from Shaw Street after being spoken to by police.
