POLICE at Warrington are appealing for help from the public following an arson attack on a house in the early hours of today.
The blaze was at a property in Salisbury Street, Warrington where an accelerant of some kind was poured through the letterbox at around 1.30am and then set alight.
Fire crews rushed to the scene and quickly extinguished the blaze.
The occupants were at home at the time but were alerted by a smoke alarm and no-one was hurt.
But police and fire chiefs have stressed that the incident could have been much more serious. A number of lines of enquiry are being followed, house-to-house enquiries are being carried out, CCTV cameras checked and forensic tests carried out.
DC Neil Radley said: “We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact us.
“We are also appealing for anyone who was in the area last night and may have seen something significant to get in touch.
“It is apparent that the fire was caused by some form of accelerant being put through the letterbox and then ignited.
“Fortunately no-one was injured but the potential repercussions could have been serious had the fire not been quickly extinguished.”
Mobile incident commander Helen Tooley, from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, added: “This fire could have had even more serious repercussions, being in the heart of a residential area.
“Firefighters did an excellent job containing the fire and preventing the blaze from spreading. We are urging anyone with any information about this incident to assist us in our joint investigation with Cheshire Police.”
Anyone with any information is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 or through the anonymous Crimestoppers hotline on 0800 555 111.
